On the opening of exhibition «Icelandic-Soviet musical cooperation
in the 50-60th of the XX century»
On September 7 Russian Embassy stuff took part in the opening of exhibition
«Icelandic-Soviet musical cooperation in the 50-60th of the XX century» in
the City Library of Mosfellsbaer.
The exhibition was arranged by the
“Gljúfrasteinn-Laxness Museum” – home of the outstanding Icelandic writer,
winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1955 and great friend of Russia
Halldor Laxness with the support of the Icelandic Society for Cultural
Relations with Russia ("Menningartengsl Íslands og Rússlands") – “MIR” in
the abbreviated form.
Senior Counsellor of the Embassy S.Andriashin stressed in the welcoming
speech that Russian-Icelandic cultural cooperation remains one of the most
important spheres of bilateral relations, largely due to the fact that it
has more than a solid foundation. For decades, since March 1950 "MIR"
Society with the support of the Union of the USSR Friendship Societies held
significant cultural events in Iceland, which received, as a rule, a wide
Musical exchanges in the 50-60's. of the XX century, which
Halldor Laxness organized, as the head of the "MIR" Society (he headed the
"MIR" for 18 years), were one of the most successful areas of cultural
cooperation between Iceland and USSR, and then the new Russia.
The cultural elite of Iceland recognized the outstanding contribution of the "MIR"
Society under the chairmanship of Halldor Laxness to the cultural life of
